REFLECTIONS

We are deeply saddened that the Moulin Rouge site was the location of a devastating blaze on Wednesday, May 6, 2009. Though the blaze was concluded to have been "human" caused, no individuals have been identified; investigate the links below for more information. We are happy to report that the famous Moulin Rouge neon sign, designed by Betty Willis, was removed from the structure days before the blaze and taken to the Las Vegas Neon Museum. Also, while the blaze consumed the V-shaped hotel wings, the historic street facade and iconic Moulin Rouge tower remain standing on the property.

Despite the tragic loss of the Moulin Rouge hotel wing in this latest fire, the Moulin Rouge Museum & Cultural Center will continue to trace the remarkeble history of the Moulin Rouge, create educational opportunities for a range of ages, develop an exhibition and museum space to discuss the storied casino's history with future generations, and to follow efforts to redevelop the historic property.

The history of the Moulin Rouge has been deeply ingrained into the lives and memories of many who live, and have lived, in Las Vegas. Your memories of the Moulin Rouge are vital to our mission; if you would like to share your recollections of the history of the Moulin Rouge and what it has meant to you, the community in West Las Vegas, or the history of discrimnation and civil rights in Las Vegas and southern Nevada, please contact us. You can also help us to rekindle the energy, glamour, and mystery of the Moulin Rouge Hotel and Casino by volunteering your time or donating to the museum.
